Toll-free, there's the rub. Most lower schools can't even afford another
phone line into the building, much less the charges for the call. That's
why I am actively researching the use of wireless LAN technology for this
purpose. It's easier than you might think and when you consider how close
together schools tend to be within a given geographic area, the physics
become a lot better. Now add public access systems at your local public
library and you can see the potential for quite a nice little wireless
MAN.
I have long believed that the power of knowledge/information provided by
global networking needed to be brought below the University level. I am
very glad to see this being espoused by others, especially those in a
position to do something about it.
