I'd say the minimum effective speed of the t-3 backbone is
not 5 megabits per second. I have rarely achieved more than
4.2 megabits per second when transferring fairly large
files. However, I believe that our low effective throughput
is more a function of network traffic than an inherent
inability of the RS6000's and Ciscos to accomodate the T3
bandwidth. While working with ANS engineers to debug a
problem I was having shipping data, I saw much higher speeds
over the same lines when all other traffic was blocked.
I have been disappointed with Internet throughput,
especially when compared to the intra-enterprise transfer
rates one gets on dedicated T1 and T3 WAN's. And with
traffic increasing, I hear many more folks saying how they
now wait to the "off hours" to transfer bulk data around. I
guess this makes me a believer in the gigabyte network - out
of necessity!
