I read in the April issue of Boardwatch magazine (heh, I'm only a month behind)
that PacBell is planning on deploying something called the "Knowledge Network
Gateway." The article reported that this will provide high speed access for
California schools to the Internet.
What is this (assuming it isn't an April fools article)?
I don't know if this is actually commercialization of the Internet, since
other than the phone company the participants are educational institutions. I
would guess it is just a vertical integration move on the part of the carrier,
or privatization from below (after all we've got MCI, and SPRINT offerings,
I guess it was only a matter of time for the RBOCs).
