In order to develop the technology and get it into field trials
someone has to put up risk money.
In the case of the gigabit technologies, one can see a set of
solutions emerging on the wide area side, and a full spectrum of
solutions for the LAN-environment. A lot has to be developed in the LAN
- Host area, which relates to research issues.
All these activities will in my opinion not be done by the industry
The useage or deployment experience as proposed in the NREN testbed
activities will be an important test for this technology. Experience
shows that industry (I here mostly mean the PTO/carries) has not been
able to design technologies that solves the user needs. In this case
we are talking about ATM/SAR issues, and the complex "end-to-end" protocol
design issues.
The cruicial point which I think you have been focusing on is how the
phasing out from a pilot phase, here described by the centrally funded
NSFnet to a fully public/commercial phase. The issues are more on
policy and accepting a set of new playing rules. The technology
limitations are also an important factor. Routing & addressing which
limits the complexity of the infrastructure is a problem when you want
to have an open market with a lot of players involved.
