CA*net is receiving funding from the National Research Council, part
of the Canadian federal government, to foster research and educational
networking in Canada. The regionals here include those which allowed
commercial traffic from the outset, and others which recognize that
the revenues which can be generated will help their viability. The
NRC feels that allowing any traffic which is important to the
regionals will help them survive, which in turn will help R&E
networking.
Long-haul bandwidth in Canada is expensive, and populations are very
sparce once you are further than 100 miles from the US border. The
economies of scale achieved with having as many users as possible
sharing links are even more compelling here. Forcing R&E and CO
traffic onto separate networks will substantially inhibit the
extension of one or the other into the hinterlands.
