   Well guys -- It sure looks clear now that IP/PPP is still in the
   experimental stage, and that the claims that it is better than
   somethign else are still speculation, pending analysis of the results
   of ongoing experimentation.

   This is wonderful, and I can hardly wait to see the results.

   In the meantime, back to SENDMAIL/UUCP FIDO and MMDF/PHONENET...\Stef

Absolutely no speculation about PPP being better than SLIP.  There are
a number of implementations.  You can get a number of end-point PPP
implementations that work very well.  The problem stems from a lack of
dial-up routers supporting PPP.  The closest thing so far seems to be
the Telebit NetBlazer but it still doesn't do IP address assignment,
something needed for a dial-up IP/PPP service.  Livingston has
promised us something Real Soon Now.  I have also heard that Xylogics'
Annex III will support PPP but I have no details (yet).  This is what
is keeping the service providers from fielding dial-up PPP in a big way.

As for the sync side of things, PPP is quite nice.  It is refreshing
to be able to plug one vendor's hardware into another's across a 56K
or T1 link.  At BARRNet we now use cisco's at the hub sites because
they support PPP (among other reasons but PPP was a big reason).
BARRNet's members can now use a number of different vendors' devices
at their end of the link.  Perhaps our last frustration is that
Proteon does NOT support PPP (and we have lots of Proteons left lying
around that are only marginally useful to connect to leaf sites for
that reason).  On the other hand, cisco's OSPF is still under test so
Proteon beats them in that area.

(*sigh* Wouldn't it be nice if ONE router vendor would do everything
we want to do.  Anyone know of a router vendor that has robust
implementations of both OSPF and PPP?)
