Miles,
Your suggested approach has the merit of being tuned for the typical
case. However, I think that there is a different approach to doing
that which is far more powerful, because you retain the option of
reverting to arbitrary host functionality:
Keep TCP/IP/PPP as your underlying transport infrastructure, which
apprpriate link, IP and TCP header and data compression techniques.
Use the split client/server model for the application level, but also
keep standard telnet/ftp/etc. programs around so that you have the
option just to "reach out an dir someone".
