There has been some recent discussion of disk usage patterns on Athena.
Some statistics on this can be found in /afs/athena/user/j/jfc/disk.
Interesting files are:
file.PS A postscript graph
awk-out Usage vs # users using this amount
awk-out-2 Usage vs % of sample using <= this value
awk-out-3 Same, normalized to default quota
awk-out-4 Cumulative usage vs % of sample
awk-out-5 Same, normalized to total disk space surveyed
"% of sample" means the fraction of directories sampled (8743 directories on
quota-controlled partitions, some of which are project/software lockers).
Total disk usage surveyed was 5.2 GB.
A printout of the graph is above my desk. The vertical axis is number of
lockers, the horizontal axis is fraction of total disk space or fraction of
default quota, depending on which graph you look at.
Interesting points:
25% of users use 40 KB or less
50% of users use 300 KB (1/4 quota) or less
90% of users use 1140 KB (95% default quota) or less
95% of users use 1440 KB (hard limit) or less
5% of users use 40% of space (all these have large quotas)
10% of users use 50% of space
50% of users use 93% of space
We are overcommitted by over 50% (6.4 GB available, ~10 GB quota granted).
Sorted results by directory are readable by ops/accounts in
/afs/athena/user/j/jfc/disk/data/users.sorted.
