What were you trying to do?
xmodmap -e 'keysym 8 = asterisk 8'
What's wrong:
It does not work. This only happens for 8, no other number.
Also, it only happens on the RT, and it happens with both R4 and R5
servers. The version of xmodmap in the x11r5 locker works.
What should have happened:
It should work.
