I've got an xterm that 100 columns by 53 rows. If I try to start up
help -tty, I get:
mickey-mouse /afs/athena.mit.edu/user/c/a/carla :-) help -tty
To use the On-Line Help service, you need to have a
screen with at least 80 columns by 18 rows.

I can't duplicate it, though. I tried other size windows, and then I
tried 100x53 again, and it worked.
