As a SIPB member, I'd just like to point out a few things:
o Xscreensaver is a SIPB program, and not an Athena one; it was
written by a SIPB member and is maintained by the SIPB. In the
future, we request that any problem you find with SIPB programs be
sent to bug-sipb and not bugs. (If you use sendbug, then just
change the line at the top that says "To: bugs" or similar to be
"To: bug-sipb".)
o The problem you're having is indeed a bug, but not one the SIPB can
fix. This is fro the xscreensaver manpage: (man xscreensaver)
-B (useBackground = true)
Causes the root window's pattern or color to be used as
the background of the screen when xscreensaver is
blanked or locked. This option is ineffective on IBM
RS/6000 workstations, since it doesn't work properly
due to a bug in the X server.
From your bug report I can see that you were on an RS/6000. The
RS/6000 is running an older X server than the rest of the Athena
machines (X11R3 versus X11R4) and will continue to do so until
Athena decides to upgrade to the most recent release, (X11R5).
there was some hope that that could be done in the upcoming Athena
Release 7.4, but it turned out to be impossible for certain reasons.
Until this upgrade is made, there will be a number of problems of this
nature that we will be unable to fix. We ask that you still report
them, as it is often usefull when Athena evaluates needs for
upcoming releases, but we also ask that you be patient with these
problems.
o I have forwarded you bug report to bug-sipb for our records.
Thank you,
Chad Brown
