System name: wamozart
Type and version:	KN01 7.4E (1 update(s) to same version)
Display type: PMAX-MFB

What were you trying to do?

Trying to run evaluation copies of FrameMaker and IslandWrite document
preparation packages on a monochrome DECstation.

What's wrong:

When text is displayed on the screen, the characters are misshapen and there
are black lines and spots in apparently random places on the screen in the
text entry window.

What should have happened:

The obvious: the text should have displayed normally, in the proper size and
font.

Please describe any relevant documentation references:

The problem shows up only on Athenized monochrome DECstations. When the
programs are run on a DECstation and displayed on another machine (i.e.
VAXstation), the output appears normal. It shows up on Ultrix 4.2 (Release 7.3)
and 4.2a (Release 7.4). Printed output is normal. Other similar packages (i.e.
Interleaf) do not show the problem.

I have already informed Anne Lavin and Ezra Peisach. They tried the latest
window manager release from DEC and the problem persists. I called Island
Graphics (IslandWrite) and they said they had only seen something similar once;
the remedy seemed to be an upgrade of the window manager from DEC and an
upgrade of the OS (to Ultrix 4.2a or 4.2b) but details are sketchy and they
have not been able to contact the customer. They cannot reproduce the problem
on a non-Athenized machine. To see the problem, add evaluate and run either
IslandWrite or demomaker. (The former may be temporarily not working as our
evaluation password has run out. I am working on getting it renewed).
