I have seen your particular failure before. You have a .startup.X which
simply does a config_console. I have seen this before on DECstations
where the console is the only thing open on the display. In theory
Xlogin sets the flag to keep the X server open when you login. I suspect
on a DECstation, there is a kernel bug or something that causes this to
fail. pmon seems to indicate that the global Xsession always has the X
server open but I wonder if it sometimes fails....
More investigation is needed....
