What's wrong:
Observed while reading news:
emacs occasionally displays text characters as rectangular blocks.
My default font is "fixed". Character zero in that font is a
rectangular blob.
Occasionally, text at the end of a line is "replaced" by these blob
characters.
Hitting C-l invariably seems to fix the problem; attempts to
deliberately recreate the problem seem to fail.
