VAX 7.3P emacs X refresh problem

I doubt we can reproduce this, but:
Emacs had just started up in X window mode. The window existed, but
was empty except for some status messages in the bottom line. There
was another window obscuring half of the emacs. I removed the window
which was obscuring emacs exactly while emacs was painting text in its
window for the first time. Emacs ended up putting little rectangular
black blocks where characters should have been in the part of the
window previously obscured by the other window. However, ^L fixed it.
