Display type: SM

What were you trying to do?
See whether or not I have any mail when I log in.

What's wrong:

Since release 7.3 came out, I usually have not gotten messages "You have
1 message (...)" or whatever in the console window when I log on.
Instead, I get something like:

22:21 Setting up environment...
22:21 attach: /afs/athena.mit.edu/contrib/sipb linked to /mit/sipb for filesyste
m sipb
22:22 Starting mwm window manager...
22:22 Starting the Athena Dashboard...
22:22 Creating logout button...
22:22 Creating initial xterm window...
22:22 Running standard startup activities...
22:23 from: can't find post office server.
22:23 from: Trying unix mail drop...
22:23 Running custom startup activities listed in ~/.startup.X...
22:23 gor: w20-575-40.MIT.EDU :0.0 Wed Sep 25 22:13:26 1991
22:23 Session initialization completed.

which has error messages instead. If I type "from" on my own after the
initialization completes, I do get a list of messages, and I can incorporate
them successfully.

What should have happened:
The lines with "from" shouldn't be there, and instead if I have any
mail a line "You have n messages (xxx bytes)" or something like that should
be displayed.

Please describe any relevant documentation references:
[Please replace this line with your information.]
