When I try to ftp on the rios, I get:

/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/j/jefft% ftp labrea.stanford.edu
Connected to labrea.stanford.edu.
220 labrea.Stanford.EDU FTP server (SunOS 4.1) ready.
Error - .netrc file not correct mode.
Remove password or correct mode.
221 Goodbye.

my homedir is afs. anyuser rl

.netrc is a soft link to a .netrc in a fascist directory.

I have nothing private in my .netrc, but what if I wish to keep something
secure in there, there isn't anything I can do with an afs homedir.

I'm not quite sure exactly what it should do, but this behavior is wrong.
