What were you trying to do?
find out what the default update time is for xload.
What's wrong:
according to the manpage, the default update time is 5 seconds.
by observation, it is obvious that the update time is 10
seconds. also, the sources for StripChart.c reveal that the
update time is 10 seconds.
What should have happened:
the manpage should document reality.
