What were you trying to do?

Include Macintosh Superpaint drawings in a LaTeX file, and print out the
file including the figures.

What's wrong:

I had created some graphics using Superpaint 2.0 and saved them in postscript
form. I then ported these figures over to Athena. Using macps, I was able
to convert these to postscript files which could be successfully printed
out individually using lpr. So far, so good.

These files were then included in my LaTeX output using the \PSbox command.
I LaTeX'd the .tex file, then converted it to a postscript file using
dvi2ps (which then included the Mac figures). All of the showpage commands
from the graphics were included in a command defintion for cp:

cp{not{userdict/#copies 0 put}if ma 0 gt{{t1 the{exit}if}loop}if{copypage}{showpage}ifelse pm restore}bdf

Without changing anything in the dvi2ps output with regard to either cp or
showpage, the file and all included graphics could be successfully viewed
with gs. I then attempted to print out the file on a stnadard LN0R3
printer, the file would print until it got to the page where the first
figure was supposed to be printed out, then it stopped printing and hang
for several minutes without printing anything. Then I would get a zephyr
notice that my file had sucessfully printed, when actually I had gotten
only a few pages with no figures. So something seemed to be causing the
printers to choke on printing the graphics.

Krishna eventually found out that there was one printer where the file
could be printed out: linus. There I could get my file printed out with
the figures included. Also, if I ported the output *.ps file back to a
Macintosh, it could be printed successfully on a Laserwriter using SendPS.

Second, the problem with dvips. I created a postscript file with dvips
instead of dvi2ps and this file could not be viewed with gs. Instead, I
could view until the first graphic, which would be displayed and then gs
would crash.

Please describe any relevant documentation references:

The LaTeX file can be found in /mit/oliver2/nihgrant/nihgrant.tex, and its
coresponding dvi file is /mit/oliver2/nihgrant/nihgrant.dvi . The
postscript file originally created with dvi2ps is nihgrant.ps, while that
created with dvips is /mit/oliver2/nihgrant/nihgrant.ps.dvips.

The Macintosh graphics files can be found in /mit/oliver2/pic. The
original files ported from the Mac are of the form *.macps, while the
converted output from macps for inclusion in the LaTeX file are in the form
*.ps.
