The problem you report in the message included below is known, and is
documented in the system release notes for release 7.2. Quoting from
those release notes (available by running "help" and selecting 2, 2,
6, 9,
A bug exists that prevents console logins from working reliably on
VAX workstations. Sometimes the user name is not echoed to the
screen and is read incorrectly. For some reason, terminal
characteristics are set incorrectly on shutdown of X. If this
happens, depress and release the CONTROL key. (The system
believes that the key is still pressed when the X server begins to
shutdown after the user types CTRL-P.)

hi,
I think there is a bug with console login on VaxStation 3100s.
I typed Ctrl-P and it stopped the xlogin window and gave me the prompt. But when I type my username, it became control characters or something that's not printable. I tried hitting
Ctrl-Shift-P and it worked. I did not have this problem with RTs. But I have this problem with the two 3100's that
I tried.
