What's wrong:
At username prompt, typein is not echo'd. Then
when you try to enter a password, an immediate
newline seems to get entered. After a few tries,
you finally get logged in.
Sounds like the problem with VS-II's which causes the console driver
to think that the ctrl key is depressed right after the X server is
killed off. Try pressing and releasing the ctrl key before trying to
log in, after the X server dies.
