I duplicated the failing Makefile, and discovered that the last 20K of
the file consisted of \000.
I don't know why this occured. Apparently, my bringing the file into
the editor and writing it out got rid to the "line too long" of 20K of
nulls.
I am in the process of checking my genmake operation to see where the
nulls came from.
