Surprisingly enough, these cases function identically on a vax
host. (I had assumed it was an uninitialized-variable bug which
would have a machine-dependent symptom.)
Whoops, almost identically: "finger jh me" on a vax gives "On
since 8 on unix:0.0 on host sol.MIT.EDU" (that's "On since
space/eight/control-B").
