    rpc.mountd uses the hostname as returned by gethostname (up to the first
    '.') as the kerberos instance used to decrypt the authenticator in the RPC
    request.  It should force the instance to lower case, since NFS mapping is
    otherwise impossible to a machine with upper case letters in its hostname.

This is not true... some people have /etc/srvtab with uppercase letters
in the name.  For instance, AlefNull.  The proposed solution here will
break such machines.
