Thank you for your bug report.
Actually, the "source ~/.startup.X &" was put in so that the session
gate would always be run, regardless of a user error. In the previous
release, there were reports about users finding "logout" not working.
Ocassionally, the user's .startup.X file would not complete, but the
xlogout button would appear and the user would be left to believe that
after hitting logout, that their session would be terminated.
The other reason this was changed is to quickly allow you to abort the
session. If the session is taking too long to startup, you still want
to be able to abort and logout.
Perhaps, the message should be changed to read something else, but
removing the & should probably not be done. If you have a
recommendation for a new message, we'd be glad to hear it (I can't think
of one off hand).
