this old bug is still with us:
if your pick returns a large number of hits, xmh
will happily write an .xmhcache file that it then
can no longer use. that's right, it will write
line lengths that it itself cannot handle, thereby
requiring the application of emacs to the .xmhcache
file which, in turn, causes one of those interminable
rescan operations...
