xterm mwm scrollbar lossage

I have an xterm in mwm.
I maximize it.
I select "scrollbar" from the xterm C-middle menu
The window does not grow wider, and xterm gets confused as to where
the left edge is. In fact, it gets confused as to he "normal" size of
the window, and all sorts of other fun stuff.
After this, the scrollbar is unreliable.
