unauthentic personal message - but it was the global motd!

I logged in to steve-dallas (an RT) and got the global motd (about the Athena
AFS Cell being unavailable sometime tongight) as a zephyrgram. The header
line for the motd said:
UNAUTHENTIC Personal message from kevles at STEVE-DALLAS.MIT.EDU
This has never happened to me before. I have not changed my dot files
since I had to when they were moved aside. I did check that the motd
I received was an authentic message, just in case...
I have no idea how why this happened, or how to recreate it. Sorry.
