gets confused with wrapping lines:
type several ordinary (unwrapped) lines without intervening blank
lines
go to the end of one of the middle ones, and delete the return at the
end of it
type C-e
where is the cursor?
type C-a C-e
now it's happy again.
also, mouse buttons in this version conflict with xterm's
