this seems to be a different manifestation of a bug i reported
in earlier releases.  in the past

whois hm19 

(or any other valid NIC token) would cause the connection to (then)
SRI-NIC.ARPA to happen, information to be displayed, followed by an
endless output of NULs.  ^C would (appropriately) interrupt it, and 
the shell prompt would appear again.

now, ^C doesn't seem to be able to interrupt it, ^Z won't put it in
the background, etc.  the only way out seems to be to kill it from
another shell.

(i reckon the hostname referred to in the manpage and the sources for
whois should be changed to NIC.DDN.MIL).
