i think that machtype -c must return something more
expressive than ``MIPS''; i'd suggest ``MIPS-VAX''
or something that indicates byte order. simple
machtype should be change to return ``mipsv'' or
``vmips'' similarly. anticipating the day when there
are mips chip based workstations with the other byte
order, i think there needs to be some sense of what
the appropriate binaries as indicated directly by
machtype. this should be changed soon, before it
is too late...
