Hi Gerzain -
Don't worry about the bug report - we're glad to hear about issues.
And I think all of us have written enough bug reports to know perfectly
well that sometimes it's just hard to figure out where to start.
As for joining SIPB, we'd be glad to have you! You should feel free to
stop by our office in W20-557 - it's generally open any time after noon
(and you can check at http://sipb-door.scripts.mit.edu/) - or our
website http://sipb.mit.edu for more information. There are a lot of
SIPB members who pass through the office, and spending some time there
is a great way to make yourself known to our community. If you have a
chance to stop by, I'm sure anyone there can fill you in more formally
on the membership process.
As for the actual problem, running Compiz on Debathena should definitely
be possible - I think a couple of the workstations in the SIPB office do
that. We generally try to sit on top of, rather than in lieu of, the
base Ubuntu distribution.
First of all, just to be sure, you are trying to get Compiz working on a
personal machine, not one of the cluster workstations, right? We
currently have some mechanisms to keep people from using Compiz on
cluster machines, due to some privacy issues we've run into with its
window management.
If you are working on personal machine, which flavor or metapackage of
Debathena did you install ("standard", "login", "login-graphical", or
"workstation" are the likely options here)?
Do you know if you need to enable any proprietary graphics drivers for
your hardware in order to make Compiz work (you'll see a popup window in
the GNOME panel if you're a system admin and the drivers are available)?
Did you enable Compiz for your specific account? Sometimes Compiz won't
be turned on by default for your account. You can enable it by going to
System -> Preferences -> Appearance, going to the Visual Effects tab,
and selecting either "Normal" or "Extra"
Oh also - it'd be great if you could keep bugs@mit.edu on the CC list
for this thread by using reply-all. There are a handful of people who
read this, and you're more likely to get a response faster. It's also
helpful to us for record-keeping purposes.

Then let me tell you that I am very interested in joining SIPB; I'm doing Interphase right now, but it'll be over by the 19th. I have been checking out how to install Debathena on my PC, which I successfully managed to do by installing Ubuntu X86-64 edition and then installing the Debathena packages. I had tried installing from the live CD, but I wanted to take full advantage of the 64 bit architecture that my laptop offers. I have my local administrator account and then I log on to Debathena using my Kerberos account. I have local programs installed on my local account that I can access in my Debathena account, but I have wanted to use Compiz Fusion on my Debathena account without affecting the Debathena server. I have a theory: I believe that since i'm accessing an X11 server then I can't alter the native graphic environment set up on the MIT X11 server. Is this!
true, or is there a way that I can use Compiz Fusion on Debathena without messing up your system?
