The main problem here is that gnome-terminal usually leaves a
stale utmp entry behind at the end of a session, due to a race
condition. I have reported this to the upstream GNOME
maintainers, and submitted a local fix which will be deployed
in an upcoming patch release.

There is also a bug in w (it should ignore stale utmp entries),
caused by its reading uninitialized data when determining
whether the entry's pid is still valid. I sent a bug report and
patch to the upstream maintainers.

Thanks for reporting this.

Bob
