Thanks -- it wasn't a permission problem, it was a shared library problem.
I had to manually set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to:
/mit/firefox/arch/sun4x_59/versions/current:/mit/firefox/arch/sun4x_59/versions/current/components:/usr/athena/lib:/usr/lib
Now starting it as /mit/firefox/arch/@sys/versions/1.0.7/firefox
works! At least, it gets all the way to opening a browser window, I haven't
tested it too extensively yet.

My home solaris machine is an Ultra60, which is not supported hardware,
and I don't have time to risk upgrading and then needing to reinstall if
it loses. The linux machine is a headless server I was just trying it
out on, it wouldn't be too satisfactory to run firefox over a remote X
connection (at least not on the pathologically congested 10mb LAN here).
So, I'm happy to run this for now and if it breaks again I'll just look
into installing my own copy of firefox.. Yesterday I found a Solaris
build of 1.0.6 that worked with only a little coaxing.
thanks,
