I believe I've seen this under Solaris as well.
Font kerning seems to be busted on nytimes.com as seen
by both Firefox and Mozilla on 9.4 machines.
Here are two screenshots, the second from xmag:

Notice how the "nt" in "Rents" is run together?
Inspection of the zoomed image shows that there is in fact no
whitespace between them -- there is antialiased
grey visible between the two letters.
I'm not sure what's wrong here, but presumably
there is no trouble reproducing it?
I haven't noticed it on other Web sites.
