Well,

I can reproduce this, but I think it's in the "it's not a bug,
it's a feature" category. I'm pretty sure ooffice defaults to the
directory you refer to for importing sample images. It has a path
starting "/var/.." because we're copying the locker locally to improve
performance.

If you run Tools -> Options -> Paths, and change one or both of the
Gallery and Graphics path settings to be just your home directory (or
whatever...) the setting will stick.  This is a bit tricky but can be
done; I'm not sure if you need both but I did one first, that didn't
do it, so then I did the other and it worked- don't recall which I did
first..
