boot failure after update on lilo machines

The other day, I was in w20, and noticed a number of linux machines
had failed to boot properly after updating to 9.3.18. The problem
appeared to be that there were a bunch of garbage entries in
lilo.conf, which cause lilo not to run properly during the update
process. The solution I used was to punt all but the first lilo.conf
entry, re-run lilo and reboot.
