What were you trying to do?

SSH to my machine.

What's wrong:

Over the past few months, on 3-5 occasions, either I or other users
have attempted to SSH to my machine (scyther.mit.edu), and on the
client side, ssh has connected, and then nothing happened. When this
has happened, scyther.mit.edu became very sluggish. For example,
tonight, the load average hit 11, and the keyboard and mouse were not
very usable.

Running top (remotely, since it was too hard to do so locally)
informed me in all cases that sshd (running as the user who was
attempting to SSH in to my computer) was taking up a large percentage
of CPU and significant processor time. Killing that process restored
responsiveness.

What should have happened:

SSH should not have hung, and my machine should have remained
responsive.
