i find that a cut (with the left button on the mouse)
is sometimes unavailable on the alternate screen of
another window if that alternate screen was not visible
at the time of the cut - i.e. the paste will be null
despite that fact that the buffer has material in it.
the missing buffer contents become available again
when the alternate screen is dispensed with.
unfortunately, this is an intermittent condition.
