What were you trying to do?

A user contacted the OLC office this morning, reporting that he was
getting a license server error when trying to run Mathematica.

What's wrong:

Mathematica will not start, and gives an error message stating that the
license has expired, and it cannot contact the license server.

What should have happened:

Mathematica starts.

Please describe any relevant documentation references:

On Athena Server (linux) Version 9.3.8, Athena Server (sun4) Version
9.2.28, I tried running the following:

>> athena% mathematica
>> attach: /afs/athena.mit.edu/software/math_v5.0.1 attached to
/mit/math_v5.0.1 for filesystem math_v5.0.1
>>
>> Starting Mathematica (Notebook interface), please wait...
>>
>> Hit shift-return to terminate and evaluate each line...

And got the following error:

>> License Expired
>>
>> The front end could not contact the MathLM server "license-3". Make
>> sure that MathLM is running and can communicate with this machine.
>> Contact your system administrator for further information.

On a dialup machine (all-night-tool), I got the following:

>> athena% math
>>
>> Starting Mathematica. please wait....
>>
>> To exit type Quit (case sensitive) at the Mathematica prompt...
>>
>> for the Notebook interface version, start as "mathematica" instead...
>>
