This issue of having the slw wrapper interfere with actual users is
pretty worrysome to me, from a policy perspective. [but it's impressive
that it hasn't come up before!]

One quick slightly mitigating option would be to frob the matlab
wrapper to explain the situation to users, so they don't simply give
up and conclude matlab is broken. I would recommend doing this.
