Google tells me that /var/preserve was historically used as an auto-save
location for editors, particularly vi and ex, but I think the versions
of those editors on Linux use /var/tmp/vi.recover instead.  It is not
intended for direct use by users.

Mucking with the permissions of native Red Hat directories would not be
wise.
