Well, being one of those so consigned, I took a look. It seems like all the
template files and examples are unloadable by Star Office. But if I copy them
to my home directory they load just fine. The fact that the original location
is read-only doesn't seem to make a difference. I suspect a maximum path
length limitation, but presuming there is one there isn't much I can do 
about it; in any case the latest and greatest Star Office release is due in
a week or two so I don't see any point in efforts to fix this. You didn't say
who the user was, but in case she cares, she can copy the templates locally
out of /mit/soffice_v6.0/distrib/i386_linux24/share/samples/english
