Subject: standrad table bug?
Log Initiated for user Jonathan I. Kamens (jik@M16-034-3.MIT.EDU)

Topic: scribe
Question:
I just ran into what I think is a bug with the standardtable library, although
I am not sure, so I want to kick it around in OLC before sending it to bugs....
The sample table which will cause this bug to manifest itself is the poker odds
table found in the stock answer for standardtables. Apparently, if the column-
heading for any particular column is wider than any of the items *in* the
column, the text that is wider will be cut off. When I scribed the poker odds
table, I lost the "er" and the "le" on the words "Number Possible" in the
middle column because none of the numbers in the middle column are wider than
"Numb" or "Possib."
Is this a known bug? If it is a bug, is there a known fix? I assume it would
be possible to insert forced spaces (@ @ @ or something) in an element of the
column to make scribe think it's wider, but is there a better way?

An additional comment: I added three forced spaces to the widest item in the
problematic column, and then it scribed fine.
I smell a bug.

Hi Jon, I'm not sure if this is a bug, but it is definitely not a feature.
The only way to get around the problem is to either specify the column
widths or force spaces in with @ , @#, or @Quad. Of course you can
always make sure the headings are all shorter than the longest entry
in the column :-)

What do you mean by "specify the column widths?" Is that possible?

Oops, I thought you had logged out, sorry.
In the @standardtable() command, you can specify columnwidth,
firstcolumnwidth, or othercolumnwidths. For example,
@standardtable(name foo, columnlined, firstcolumnwidth 2 inches,
othercolumnwidth 1.25 inches)
See the stock answer for more information.

Thanks. I guess this is finished for now. I'll fling it at bugs and see if
they know about it already.
