I've certainly seen kudzu invocations hang when the running and installed
kernels don't match, though that should not be the case for a
9.2.16->9.2.20 update. (We had a minorly disastrous patch relesae due to
this a while back.) Beyond that, I have no solid information, although
there are suggestions in Red Hat's bugzilla that the current Red Hat 9
kudzu has some nondeterministic-seeming hanging tendencies.
In any case, we can certainly remove the kudzu invocation from the update
script, given that we now run "kudzu -q" in the athena-sysconfig init
script, for roughly the same reasons we do so in the update script.
Tom, is there anything unusual about the hardware of these machines or
anything connected to it? Also, I'm currently doing some debugging on
vat-brain, so I would indeed like to keep it in its current state until
Thursday, assuming it continues to be reasonably possible.
