Sorry for the delay in answering this.
The version of the installer now in the dev cell no longer preemptively
tries to load the aic7xxx driver if no disks are found. However, that
section of the code should never have been reached if a SCSI driver had
already been loaded and a SCSI disk was listed in /proc/partitions.
In any case, I'd be curious to hear (if you're willing to try
reinstalling the machine (qz?) again) if the new installer volume fixes
this problem. (Either wait for the propogation to the athena cell, or
specify the dev cell rhlinux volume (/afs/dev/system/rhlinux vice
/afs/athena/system/rhlinux) at install time.)
(I've also just noticed a subtle logic flaw in that section of code, but
I'm not sure it would actually make any difference to this, or anything
else for that matter.)
