Thanks for the detailed analysis. I should have gone through the
scripts in the locker more carefully and found it myself. A couple of
things made this confusing- among which, that I didn't know exactly
what gathrun and attachandrun are supposed to do, and that the scripts
in question are Wolfram's and not ours as is usually the case (no
excuse of course), and the presence of the "Linux-dyn" dirs in the locker;
these were added recently to make this Mathematica version work on
RedHat 9; otherwise it segfaults. The vendor gave phone instructions for
adding these manually from the installation CD, saying they would
"replace the Linux directories", and that the launch script should
be edited to account for this change. I found one place in the scripts that
referenced "Linux" (the line "sysid=Linux" and thought that was all
that needed editing); I see the part I missed...
