zipdrive permission problems?

Many (all?) of the zip drives on cluster linux machines
produce "permission denied" errors against /dev/sga (ERr, I think.
Possibly flakey memory) when trying to use them (e.g. "mdir z:").
Works fine as root, or if you chmod the device.
