On re-read, I should be a little clearer about exactly what my problem was.
In the preferences dialogue, under "Privacy and Security", "Certificates"
there's an option, "Client Certificate Selection". Changing it had no
effect, and reverted back as soon as I opened the preferences dialogue
again. Clearing everything and restarting (but *not* simply deleting
my mozilla profile and making a new one) was what fixed it.
