I will try to force Mozilla in its globals into thinking that news servers
do not use SSL by default.

I believe if you uncheck the "uses SSL" box for the news account's
configuration in Mozilla, you'll find that the port automatically changes
back to one down in the hundreds, probably 119 if that is a standard. It's
been pretty good about guessing the right port defaults, but bad about
guessing on SSL use.

This is exacerbated by the fact that we try to turn ON SSL by default so
that people will not misconfigure their MIT IMAP accounts. Mozilla may use
one default SSL setting for all mail/news account creation, in which case
I can't change it; it's vital that we keep people from trying to check
their mail insecurely.

I'll take a look. I think that changing the news.mit.edu configuration is
the wrong answer in any case.
